MOUNT PLEASANT — A 26-year-old man died in a house fire in Thornwood early Thursday morning.

The Thanksgiving tragedy unfolded around 4:45 a.m. in a house on Warren Avenue, near Kensico Road. Flames broke out in the basement of a two-story house, Thornwood Fire Chief James Gedris said.

Three people in the home escaped the blaze as firefighters arrived, but one man was caught in the basement. He was taken to Westchester Medical Center in Valhalla, where he was pronounced dead, Gedris said.

The man’s name was not immediately available.

The fire was mostly contained to the basement and was under control shortly after 6 a.m. The cause of the fire is under investigation, though it appears to be accidental, Gedris said.

There were working smoke detectors, he said, and an alarm alerted firefighters to the blaze.

Firefighters from Briarcliff Manor, Elmsford, Hawthorne, Ossining, Pleasantville and Valhalla also responded.
