Lithium Ion Battery fires

Numerous officers and members of our Department have received training in dealing with Lithium Ion Battery fires; during which, instructors have emphasized that it’s not “if” we will encounter one, it’s “when.”   The “when” happened in a short period of time.

We encountered two such fires in recent weeks.  The first was in a commercial store front on November 9th and the second was in a private residence on November 23rd.  While both fires were small and easily extinguished.  Both produced significant amounts of smoke; and obviously both included the potential for serious consequences.

In both incidents, as per training and protocol, the County Haz Mat Unit was requested and responded to safety remove the batteries from the scene.

Firefighting remains a very dangerous profession, but with proper training, those dangers can be minimized.
